How what we wear empowers us

by Charline Catteeuw

Confidence, empowerment, liberty. Things most of us have grappled with at one point or another, in today’s world that tends to make it tough for us to find our place and direction in.
At Les Basics, we’re all about feeling good from the inside out, and we definitely see our wardrobes as key players in turning our attitude from a negative to a positive state every so often. The psychology behind it might be rather fascinating - how what we wear and who made it can impact us as individuals. Fashion is so much more than just clothing. The power of it is real, and we’re giving you our top keys to amp up your confidence and empower yourself through what you wear.

Feel it - The world will get it

All too often we get obsessive about wearing the “right” thing. We worry about dressing appropriately and other people judging us when really, it should be all about how we personally feel in what we choose to wear.

We’re not telling you that there’s no importance to dressing appropriately - Of course, there are some unspoken rules to be considered, particularly in more formal or cultural environments, but external validation should never be placed over how you feel in what you choose to wear.

Because if you personally don’t feel good in what you wear, you will waste a lot of your energy proving your worth and justifying yourself over naturally giving off the message you want others to see. Just think about how many times you didn’t feel good about the way you dressed. Think about how your interaction was different from a time you felt great in what you were wearing.

Find your personal style

The most obvious way that fashion can empower us is how the right outfit can make us feel. And while there's no one-size-fits-all formula when it comes to finding the outfit that brings out the most in you, finding your personal style can definitely have an empowering effect, as it allows us to communicate who we are to the world, just by what we choose to put on. We all have our favourite look - the one we wear when we need a confidence boost. So find out what it is you feel comfortable and confident in and what pieces you gravitate towards. Don’t be scared to go out of your comfort zone and try new combinations. It might sound scary, but it can do wonders for your confidence. It also helps to know what is in your wardrobe and to use it to your advantage.

Trust yourself

Trusting yourself should be the most natural thing to do, but more often than not it’s not. Because our current world is structured in a way that tell us ‘Whatever you do, don’t trust yourself’.
When it comes to clothing, one of the biggest downfalls we experience with clothing is a lack of confidence to know we are making the right choices for ourselves. We can’t make good choices while lacking the confidence to see them, which is why learning to trust yourself is so crucial. If something feels a bit off it probably is. Whatever outfit works for you, feeling confident is key.
